Coal Flow Balancing and Combustion Tuning
Comprehensive coal flow balancing project that achieved 78% reduction in unburned carbon, transforming fly ash quality from unusable to marketable grade.
Key Results
Before & After Comparison
| Metric | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| Unburned Carbon in Ash | 9% | 2% |
| Fly Ash Color | Dark/Black | Light Gray |
The Challenge
The power plant experienced severe coal flow imbalances among burner pipes, resulting in high unburned carbon (9% UBC) in fly ash. The dark-colored ash was unsuitable for sale and required costly disposal.
Our Solution
TABi performed detailed coal flow measurements and implemented systematic balancing of coal distribution among all burner pipes. Air flow optimization and combustion tuning complemented the coal flow balancing work.
Results Achieved
Unburned carbon dropped from 9% to 2% - a 78% reduction. Fly ash color changed visibly from dark black to light gray, indicating dramatically improved combustion. The ash became marketable, creating new revenue.
